We have finished Chapter 1 in our math book, in which we:

* reviewed the numbers 0-10 and learned the number words
* practiced writing those numbers, trying very hard make them face the right direction!
* learned and practiced the concepts of “greater” and “less”
* worked together to make a graph with information we gathered right in our classroom
* answered questions using the graph, once again with the concepts of greater and less
* had our first math test and practiced proper test behavior ie: eyes on your own paper, raise your hand if you have a question, etc.

Now we move on to Chapter 2, where we will practice adding numbers up to 10. Stay tuned for news on how we will use our creativity to solve addition problems!

Here’s how the song/poem goes… it’s to the tune of “If you’re happy and you know it…

If you think you know this friend
shout it out!
If you think you know this friend
shout it out!
If you think you know this friend
can you tell me who it is?
If you think you know this friend
shout it out!

The words we focus on, “key words”, are: think, friend, shout, and can.

We find these words in the poem, practice reading them and sounding them out, then break them into important sound chunks: ink, end, out, and an…

Here are the words the children came up with today to go with the chunks…

ink: pink, drink, blink, wink, drinking, thinking, link
end: bend, send, bending, sending
out: pout, mouth
an: pan, man, hand, Leeanne, anchor, Anna, ran, Nana, Hannah

We’ll figure out more tomorrow. I think they did a brilliant job today!

O, Land of the free by the Carib Sea
Our manhood we pledge to thy liberty
No tyrants here linger, despots must flee
This tranquil haven of democracy
The blood of our sires which hollows the sod
Brought freedom from slavery oppression’s rod
By the might of truth and the grace of God
No longer shall we be hewers of wood

Arise! Ye sons of the Baymen’s clan
Put on your armour, clear the land!
Drive back the tyrants, let despots flee
Land of the free by the Carib Sea!

Nature has blessed thee with wealth untold
O’er mountains and valleys where prairies roll
Our fathers, the Baymen, valiant and bold
Drove back the invaders of this heritage hold
From proud Rio Hondo to old Sarstoon
Through coral isle, over blue lagoon
Keep watch with the angels, the stars and moon
For freedom comes tomorrow’s noon

Arise! Ye sons of the Baymen’s clan
Put on your armour, clear the land!
Drive back the tyrants, let despots flee
Land of the free by the Carib Sea!
